Frederic Bartlett: In 1932, this British psychologist published Remembering, the first major experimental case that memory isn't a faithful copy of the past but an active reconstruction shaped by a person's existing knowledge and cultural expectations, a theory considered radical at the time and now foundational to cognitive psychology.

War of the Ghosts: Bartlett had British research subjects read this unfamiliar Native American folk tale, then recall it repeatedly over weeks and months, and watched their retellings steadily warp the story to fit English cultural expectations, dropping supernatural elements and adding logical explanations their own culture would find more sensible.

Elizabeth Loftus: This cognitive psychologist has spent decades demonstrating in the lab how easily false memories can be planted, showing that simply asking leading questions after an event, or exposing someone to misleading post-event information, can permanently alter what a person believes they witnessed.

Deese-Roediger-McDermott Paradigm: This widely replicated lab technique shows subjects a list of closely related words, like bed, rest, and tired, then reliably finds that most people falsely 'remember' hearing a related word, like sleep, that was never actually on the list, demonstrating how easily the brain fills memory gaps with plausible inferences.

Cryptomnesia: This phenomenon occurs when a person unknowingly retrieves a genuine memory, such as a tune or phrase they once heard, and experiences it as an entirely original thought or creation, a memory-source error that has ended up at the center of several real plagiarism disputes.

George Harrison's 'My Sweet Lord' Case: A US court found in 1976 that former Beatle George Harrison had 'subconsciously' plagiarized the melody of the Chiffons' 'He's So Fine' while writing his hit 'My Sweet Lord,' concluding he had genuinely forgotten hearing the earlier song and believed he had composed something new, a textbook case of cryptomnesia.

Source Monitoring Framework: Developed largely by psychologist Marcia Johnson, this influential theory explains false memories as failures to correctly identify where a memory came from, whether a real experience, something imagined, dreamed, or merely told by someone else, a mix-up that can make a vividly imagined scenario feel exactly like a genuine memory.
